Lets Talk Anal

Lets Talk Anal

written by Bennett Aguirre

In this bold and boundary-pushing episode, “All Things Anal”, Dr. Jenn Kennedy is joined by guest Dr. Evan Goldstein to explore the complexities of anal sex by delving into safe practices, health, and destigmatizing societal norms surrounding it. Dr. Goldstein is a renowned proctologist as well as the founder and CEO of Bespoke Surgical, a proctology & aesthetic services practice in New York City. Additionally, Goldstein founded Future Method, a company providing various intimacy products, and the author of Butt Seriously: The Definitive Guide to Anal Health, Pleasure, and Everything in Between.

Dr. Goldstein sees a need for more sex education, but more specifically for all things anal. This episode addresses just that, as a lack of education and understanding only fuels the already existing stigma. It emphasizes a fresh approach to the topic—one that eliminates shame while simultaneously normalizing the conversation.

3 Types of Body Anatomy Make Anal Sex Experiences Different for Everyone

Whether people are curious in starting or are having issues getting the pleasure they desire, Dr. Goldstein introduces 3 types of bodies that are important to consider when getting into anal play. He emphasizes, “About ⅓ of people can take whatever they want, when they want, and that’s because their muscles and their skin are able to fully relax and fully open” (Goldstein, 14:30). But for the other ⅔ of people, they may need more help getting there as differences in your anatomy, pelvic muscles, and skin can impact the trajectory of your experience. For example, women’s pelvic muscles have more elasticity as a result of the accommodation to give birth but their skin is more susceptible to tearing. These differences are important to consider as complications such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures can happen as a result of not being prepared.

Using The Right Toys and Getting Comfortable With Experimenting

Using toys is a great way to start experimenting and get comfortable with anal play. But there is something to say about the type of toy you are using. It’s not that you can just use any toy and Dr. Jenn explains that in regards to anal, “Typically women own a lot of toys, but they aren’t necessarily suitable for the anus” (Kennedy, 19:41). Different toys have different structures and also are very customizable. There are dilating kits and things of that sort that can help you slowly get into experimenting in a safe and healthy way. Whether you are using toys or not, there is a huge emphasis on using proper lubrication when indulging in anal play and that it’s important to explore and get comfortable with yourself first before you do so with others.

Hygiene and Healthy Bowel Movements

Dr. Goldstein also discusses techniques in keeping up cleanliness, which is a popular concern for people going into anal play. He provides tips on dietary considerations such as increased fiber intake when it comes to cleanliness concerns, “I usually speak of gut health first before butt health” (Goldstein, 28:20). As well as providing opinions on douching and talks about how you may not always have to rely on douching if you get to know your body well.

This episode offers an eye-opening and empowering conversation about a topic that deserves more open discussion. Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Kennedy’s insights not only challenge societal taboos, but also provide valuable guidance for understanding and embracing anal health and pleasure.
